Bulldog Feeding Calculator

Get your Bulldog's portions right β€” calculated for their weight, life stage, and the exact food in your bag. Because the chart on the bag doesn't know your dog.

Values auto-fill from the food you pick. Can't find yours? Choose β€œMy food isn't listed” in the search and copy the numbers from the bag's Calorie Content (ME) label β€” dry foods typically run 3,300–4,200 kcal/kg.

Bulldog feeding notes

Bulldogs burn fewer calories than their muscular build suggests β€” brachycephalic (flat-faced) airways limit exercise, so obesity creeps up fast and directly worsens breathing. Measure every meal, keep treats under 10% of daily calories, and target a body condition score of 4–5/9. The breed also has the highest hip dysplasia incidence of any breed in OFA screening statistics, which excess weight compounds.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a Bulldog eat per day?

A typical 22.5 kg (50 lb) neutered adult Bulldog needs about 1,150 kcal per day (RER 723 Γ— 1.6) β€” roughly 2ΒΎ cups of a typical 400 kcal/cup dry food. Because bulldogs are obesity-prone, calculate from your dog's actual weight rather than the bag chart, and re-weigh monthly.

Why do Bulldogs get overweight so easily?

Their flat faces make sustained hard exercise difficult, so they burn fewer calories than their stocky build suggests β€” on top of the fact that roughly 6 in 10 U.S. dogs are already overweight (APOP). Obesity worsens bulldog airway obstruction (BOAS) and loads extra weight onto dysplastic hips β€” OFA statistics show the breed has the highest hip dysplasia rate of any breed screened. Measure meals and keep treats under 10% of daily calories.

How much should a Bulldog puppy eat?

A growing puppy needs roughly twice the calories per kilogram of an adult, split into 4 measured meals a day at 8–12 weeks, dropping to 3 and then 2 meals by 6 months. Use the growth chart above as the target: about 8.5–10.5 kg at 3 months and 16.5–20 kg at 6 months for a male. Keep growing bulldogs lean β€” a body condition score of 4–5/9 β€” since extra weight strains developing hips.

When should I switch my Bulldog puppy to adult food?

Around 12 months. Feed a complete-and-balanced puppy formula with DHA through the growth phase, and transition over 7–10 days by mixing increasing amounts of adult food. Because the breed's adult range is 18–25 kg, recalculate portions from the new food's calorie density at the switch β€” bulldogs have very little margin for overfeeding.

Is grain-free food good for Bulldogs?

There is no evidence grain-free diets benefit bulldogs, and the FDA has been investigating reports of dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs eating grain-free diets heavy in peas and legumes β€” no cause has been established, but an AAFCO-complete diet chosen with your veterinarian is the safer default. For flat-faced dogs, a kibble size and shape they can pick up comfortably matters more than grain content.
